Coming Home
This afternoon I came home feeling a little unsettled.
Nothing catastrophic had happened.
Just one of those ordinary moments that leaves your nervous system a little noisier than it was before.
For a little while, I found myself doing what I think many of us do.
I started imagining another life.
Perhaps a house beside a lake.
Or a beach somewhere else in the world.
Or a quieter place where everything would somehow feel easier.
Then something interesting happened.
Instead of searching online for property, I sat down and began writing.
Not about moving.
About home.
Over the next few hours I found myself writing about hallways, kitchen tables, gardens, the first cup of tea, and the way afternoon light moves slowly across a room.
By the end of the afternoon, something had changed.
Not my address.
Me.
It made me wonder whether our longing is always asking us to go somewhere else.
Or whether, sometimes, it is gently asking us to return to ourselves.
There may still come a day when I live beside a lake.
Or the sea.
Or somewhere I have not yet imagined.
Dreams still matter.
But today reminded me of something I don't want to forget.
A peaceful life is not only built through where we live.
It is built through how we arrive home each day.
This evening I made a cup of tea.
The dogs settled nearby.
The house became quiet again.
And for a little while...
I realised I was already exactly where I needed to be.
