The Dream Beneath the Dream
Lately I've been thinking a lot about dreams.
Not the kind we have while we're asleep, but the ones we quietly build our lives around.
For a while I thought my dream was a lake house.
Then I wondered if it was a home overlooking the beach.
Then I imagined a quiet cabin surrounded by trees.
Each version looked a little different from the last.
It made me wonder whether I was changing my mind, or simply seeing more clearly.
Perhaps I had been focusing on the setting instead of the feeling.
Because when I look more closely, the dream has always been remarkably consistent.
A slower morning.
A kettle gently coming to the boil.
Dogs following patches of sunlight across the floor.
Friends gathered around a table.
Books waiting to be read.
A garden that changes with the seasons.
Time to notice the ordinary.
The location may change.
The architecture may change.
Even the view may change.
But the life I am hoping to create remains the same.
It made me realise that beautiful places are wonderful gifts, but they cannot create a peaceful life on their own.
They simply provide a setting for the life we choose to live each day.
Perhaps that is why I have become so captivated by The Quiet House.
It isn't really about a house.
It is about creating a way of living that could exist almost anywhere.
A home that invites conversation instead of distraction.
A kitchen that encourages simple meals.
A verandah where there is time to watch the rain.
A garden that reminds us to move with the seasons instead of against them.
Maybe the dream beneath every dream is not a particular place at all.
Maybe it is the quiet hope that one day our outer world will become a gentle reflection of our inner one.
And perhaps the most beautiful discovery of all is this:
The more peace we cultivate within ourselves, the more places begin to feel like home.
