The Retreat I Never Took

A few years ago, I was accepted into a ten-day Vipassana silent meditation retreat.

I intended to go.

I had imagined ten days of silence, contemplation and looking inward.

Then life quietly changed direction.

On New Year's Day, Bailey came into my life as an eight-week-old puppy.

Without much thought, the retreat slipped away.

At the time, it felt as though I had missed an opportunity.

Today, I see it differently.

Looking back over these past four years, I wonder whether the lesson I needed wasn't found in ten days of silence at all.

Perhaps it was found in thousands of ordinary walks.

In conversations at the dog park.

In the laughter of children who stopped to pat Bailey.

In friendships that grew one familiar face at a time.

In learning that healing doesn't always happen in solitude.

Sometimes it happens in community.

Sometimes it happens with muddy paws beside you.

Sometimes it happens because a puppy quietly insists that you leave the house every day and meet the world.

I don't know why life unfolded the way it did.

But I do know this.

The path I didn't take led me to the one I was meant to walk.

And for that, I am deeply grateful.
